My client emerged triumphant from a Board meeting declaring, “I used your Jedi Mind Trick!” “You have learned well Skywalker” I might have said if I had thought of it at the time. So, what’s trick?
The Jedi Mind Trick
It’s a simple process, but one that takes time to master. It’s also the most powerful method I have seen for shifting mindsets and cultures. It’s been tried and test on some of the most ingrained cultures and it goes like this:
Ahead of major organisational change, bring colleagues together in teams:
- Grab People’s Attention – find simple way to excite people to engage in the session.
- Provide People with Information – relevant to the situation, in a format that suits the audience and including the ‘Big Picture’ Context for the change.
- Help People Work Together to Explore and Process the Information e.g. through structured dialogue or activities.
- Allow People to Draw their own Conclusions – vital to creating shared ownership for ideas and agreed actions.
- Encourage and Support them to Take Action collectively as soon as possible.
- Ensure Transparent Feedback on the Result of their Actions – to drive momentum for change.
