Treat people as agents of change rather than objects of change. That is the essence of People-Centred Change, illustrated this diagram. If you prefer words to pictures, here is a summary:
- Create Certainty through open, honest, continuous communication, and leaders that champion and role-model the change.
- Give people a sense of Purpose by engaging them in the ‘Big Picture’ context for change, as well as the Vision and benefits of change.
- Give people a sense of Control over change through participation and involvement in shaping the change itself and/or the way it is implemented locally.
- Help people to substitute old Connections with new ones – letting go of tried and trusted habits and routines in favour of new ones.
- Help people to maintain a sense of Success as they climb the learning curve and stick with change through the inevitable setbacks.
