A common barrier to organisational change is a lack of understanding of the context or ‘Big Picture’ of change. Both among those who lead it and those who will be most affected by it. Without context it is hard to see why we need to change. Without a Big Picture people struggle to take ownership of change and instead resist it.
The best way to engage people with the Big Picture for change is to get them to figure it out for themselves. See the attached generic Big Picture template. This can be customised to your own organization and specific change. he first diagram is blank and the second contains example drivers of change. This process involves leaders and then all employees working together in teams to figure out the Big Picture situation. Then they fill in the picture for themselves with Global, National, Industry, and Organisation Drivers of Change. Pretty soon, people will be having conversations about the context for change and starting to see why it is necessary. As the pennies drop people’s understanding and ownership for change begins to grow.
