To what extent will your job be replaced by AI? Follow these 5 steps to find out.
Every job will be affected by AI. Some work will be Replaced, some Augmented (Human-AI collaboration), and some will remain Human-Owned.
STEP 1: List all the Core Tasks that you Perform (see worked example below).
STEP 2: Score Each Core Task against 4 Key Criteria. Use a 1–5 scale (1 = low, 5 = high):
- Repetitiveness – How routine/predictable is the task?
- Data Dependency – Does the task rely on structured data/patterns?
- Human Judgment Required – Does the task need creativity, ethics, or contextual understanding?
- Emotional Intelligence – Does the task require empathy, persuasion, or relationship-building
STEP 3: Categorize Tasks Using Thresholds
Use the scores to classify tasks into Replaced, Augmented, or Human-Owned:
- Replaced by AI:
Criteria: High repetitiveness (4–5) + High data dependency (4–5) + Low human judgment/emotional IQ (1–2).
- Augmented by AI:
Criteria: Moderate repetitiveness/data (2–3) + Moderate judgment/emotional IQ (3–4).
- Human-Owned:
Criteria: Low repetitiveness/data (1–2) + High judgment/emotional IQ (4–5).
STEP 4: Calculate the Role’s AI Impact
Estimate the percentage of time spent on each of the 3 categories.
For example: % Replaced = (Time spent on Replaced tasks / Total role time) × 100.
Step 5: Visualize with an AI Impact Matrix (see illustration below)
Plot tasks on a 2×2 matrix to see patterns:
Y-Axis: Human Judgment/Emotional IQ (Low → High).
X-Axis: Automation i.e. Repetitiveness/Data Dependency (Low → High).
WORKED EXAMPLE: For a Customer Service Representative
Core Tasks might include:
- Answering routine FAQs.
- Resolving complex complaints.
- Escalating technical issues.
- Building rapport with customers.
In summary, if a Customer Service Representative spends:
- 40% on FAQs (Replaced)
- 30% on complaints (Augmented)
- 5% Escalating technical issues (Human-Owned).
- 25% building rapport (Human-Owned)
The role is 40% Automated, 30% Augmented, and 30% Human-Owned.
- Industry Context: Some sectors (e.g., healthcare) require stricter human oversight.
- AI Maturity: Not all “replaceable” tasks will be automated immediately (cost, ethics, tech limits).
- Skill Evolution: Augmented tasks may require workers to learn AI tools (e.g. prompt engineering).
- Adapting successfully to AI requires expertise in transformational change.
